However, I believe that all of those who were fortunate to be amongst the 575 delegates at the 14th EuRA International Relocation Congress will confirm that it was a fantastic event. Following the huge disappointment caused by the 2010 volcano, it was simply a relief to finally get the event underway but from the moment the “Return to Palma” party began the celebrations on the Wednesday evening, it was apparent that this would be an outstanding event. It’s hard to tell who is more nervous on the first day of school – the children or the parents. But when neither parent nor child speaks the language of the school, the anxiety level reaches a new high. A better model is to have a mother tongue teacher who speaks that family’s language meet and help the family during that first critical day, then remain in contact through embedded mother tongue programmes throughout the child’s enrolment in the school. The academic justification for an embedded mother tongue programme goes beyond providing a soft landing. | Re:Locate Awards EuRA and Oxford Brookes Nominated for Technical Innovation EuRA and Oxford Brookes University have been nominated for the Re:Locate Award for Technical Innovation. The Relocation Coaching Programme launched in 2010 takes a revolutionary approach to training in relocation, focussing on the needs of the individual transferee. The 12 module, online programme has now been undertaken by more than 120 members and the next modules will go online shortly. Tad Zurlinden, EuRA CEO has also been nominated for Relocation Personality of the Year. Approximately 30 EuRA members from 12 countries attended an Open Session on International education hosted by Peggy Love, President of Education Services, Dwellworks, LLC. Peggy was joined by special guests, subject matter experts, Julia Love, Dean of Admissions, ACS Egham, UK and Rudianne Stoltis, Dean of Admissions, ACS Hillingdon, UK. The session was an informal discussion about the challenges and best practices of schools, education consultants and relocation professionals as expat families strive to find schools that are the best fit for their children. The goal of the session was to share information, knowledge and best practices that result in establishing strong partnerships and ensure smooth educational transitions for relocating families.
