International Conferences - Great Events; Which to Choose?
In this edition we're examining the role that conferences have to play in successfully networking and marketing your business. During the year there is of course one major event, the EuRA Conference, but our members also attend conferences in the UK, the US and Canada, Asia and across Europe.
With such a choice of networking events, marketing budgets being squeezed and a limit to how much time we can actually spend out of the office, it is more important than ever to choose the right events for your networking needs.
Obviously we all have a favourite international conference, the EuRA meeting in the Spring! Since the first event in Barcelona eight years ago, the diversity and number of delegates we have attracted has grown enormously. Each year we evaluate the conference, taking delegates comments seriously and taking them into account to improve the next event. One change we will be making in Lisbon 2007, is to increase the opportunity for delegates to network, plan meetings and find each other. As the number of delegates has more than trebled since Barcelona, so delegates are faced with a greater challenge to find each other. In the past, it was almost inevitable that one would just "run into" almost everyone one needed to see, without scheduling a meeting. Therefore you will see some innovations at the next conference which we hope will change this.
Those delegates who have attended every conference, have noticed some big changes and Mona Radwan of Global Relocation Consultants in Egypt is one such delegate:
"When I started my Relocation company , I worked very hard to prove that GRC was worthy of being a member and carrying the name of EuRA. Although I am from out of the regular area, (I am from the Middle East ), I was honored to be accepted …. I have never missed a conference since then.
I find that the EuRA meetings are the most rewarding form the business view point, all of the attendees are top notch professionals, no time is wasted during the conference, each and every one is treated like he or she is the most important. Most of all the conferences do not have any outsiders, nor timewasters, also the training being attached to the conference helps to limit the time out of office as well as the expense."
Another delegate who has attended every EuRA conference to date is Paulene Grant, of UK Relocation Services:
"As UK Relocation Services has adapted to meet our clients needs and grown as a company, so the EuRA conferences have adapted to the needs of the relocation companies and affiliates who make up the membership. The conferences have become much larger yet manage to combine serious business opportunities with an informal and respectful atmosphere. EuRA maintains its very European persona whilst also learning from the pioneers of the relocation industry in the USA.
There is now the opportunity to acquire the EARP accreditation by attending the sessions and the training. Through the conferences, we are educating and being educated by our European neighbours. UKRS has become even more aware of the cultural differences, helping us to successfully do business across borders. Because of the conference we satisfy our clients and give them the confidence that we have an active European network."
The Association of Relocation Professionals (ARP) in the UK runs an annual conference at either the very start or the very end of the year. The purpose of this meeting is to give members the chance to get together, but also to publicise the place of the ARP in what has become a country obsessed with all matters to do with property. As property prices have soared in the UK, so the media has become dominated by TV shows extolling cashing in on the equity in property and relocating to warmer climates. Mima Hillier, Chair of the ARP and Managing Director of TTH Relocation Management told The EuRApean:
"The UK is one of the strongest markets for corporate relocation but the ARP is in an unusual position in that the UK also has a very strong private acquisitions market. Many of our members do both corporate and private client work, and the profile of the association has been raised by the current media fascination with relocation The result of this is that many journalists will take part in our conferences. There are no fewer than 6 network TV shows dealing with relocation in the UK and overseas, and our members use the ARP conferences and events to keep their links with the media and the industry strong. We are also fortunate to attract many relocation professionals from outside the UK to our events, and this helps our members to remain at the forefront of a very fast moving market. Our strong links with the corporate HR sector and their advisory role when planning training, HR forums and conferences, will guarantee that the topics discussed/presented reflect the current state of our ever changing relocation market. Throughout this year the ARP is celebrating its 20th anniversary and is participating in new relocation awards which have been sponsored by The Daily Mail and Bentley Motors. We are also organising HR Forums and training for the Corporate Sector. The climax for the celebrations will be our Industry Conference in November."
The ARP will be celebrating its 20th anniversary with a conference and dinner on November 30th, 1st December 2006, at The Hayward Gallery on London's South Bank.
Outside Europe, the largest conference is the ERC Global Mobility Symposium in the USA. This huge event attracts delegates from across the US and the world, and is particularly attractive to European companies who do a great deal of business with US Corporates. Maddellena Michieli of Professional Relo, Italy, is a regular attendee:
"I attend ERC to learn from the US market. It is very interesting to "have a look" to the latest relo trends and news before they'll be, at least partially, exported to Europe. The US market is extremely different, its characteristics and aspects often are, for many reasons, "not applicable" to Europe (and even less to Italy) though I find it's worthwhile to learn from the country where relo needs, and therefore relo-services, are born. I also find it very useful to network with US relocation management companies, though they all have EU based offices now therefore attendance also of ERC conference in Europe would definitely make sense to me." One other event that attracts providers from across the world is the SHRM conference in the USA. The Society for Human Resource Management has obvious advantages as a networking organisation for relocation providers.
Priscilla Montana of Cultural Awareness International attended the recent SHRM event in Las Vegas:
"Cultural Awareness International was again a Gold Sponsor at SHRM 2006 for the second year in a row. SHRM is a place where all of us at CAI feel we have the opportunity to become informed through the various educational sessions about new trends, policies and regulations not only in human resources, but in the fields of relocation services and intercultural training. In addition, it is often the place where we also have the opportunity to meet, catch up and network with corporate clients and global providers."The cost of attending conferences is not small, and therefore many companies will choose to send a single delegate to one, or perhaps two of these large events. To attend each of the conferences listed above as a single delegate, including flights, accommodation and the cost of the conference itself would be a minimum of €10,925, staying the minimum nights in a hotel and flying economy or with a low cast airline. This is a hefty investment for most relocation providers. Send more than one member of the company and its very likely you’ll have your finance director less than happy!
Of course, here at
EuRA we hope that the conference of choice will continue to be our annual event, but we are very aware that in order to continue to provide the best conference for our delegates, we need to stay ahead, in terms of networking, content and cost.
The EuRApean would love to hear any views you have about conferences and networking. Email
