InterCultural Word of the Week! Mudita

Mudita

Mudita  मुदिता

This Pali and Sanskrit word means the opposite of schadenfreude, it’s the taking delight in the happiness of others, vicarious joy.  In Buddhist teaching, there is even a Mudita meditation, practised to cultivate appreciative joy at the success and good fortune of others.  One of the four brahamavihara, the sublime attitudes, joy is regarded as one of the most difficult to achieve especially joy towards others when we face tragedy ourselves.
